The unit was one of nine Heavy Artillery regiments to suffer over 200 killed and is addressed as one of Fox's 300 Fighting Regiments for being one of the most-hard fought. The regiment was originally mustered in on September 8, 1862, as the 138th New York Infantry Regiment, was quickly taken to Washington D. To be used in the defenses of the nation's capital. On December 19, 1862, it was redesignated as the 9th New York Heavy Artillery Regiment.

On February 5, 1863, an additional Company M was created within the regiment with the transfer of the 22d N. Company L was organized in Albany between November 4 and December 9, 1863.

Amongst the regimental commanders, William H. Stands out as he is the son of then-Secretary of State William H.

The Regiment was divided into three battalions. In May 1864, General Grant took command of the Union Army, embarking on his aggressive Overland Campaign. Due to heavy casualties suffered by Union Army, more troops were needed to embark on the campaign. Grant ordered most of the troops defending the capital, including the 9th New York Heavy Artillery, to the front to increase troop numbers.

Two battalions, 1st and 2nd, of the 9th joined the VI Corps and the Army of the Potomac as infantry, while one, the 3rd battalion Cos. C, I, L, and F, joined the Artillery Brigade. The 9th New York Heavy Artillery joined the VI Corps on the banks of North Anna River on May 26, 1864, and then marched to the Pamunkey during the nights of May 27 and 28. From there, it departed for Cold Harbor on May 29, guarding the wagon train along the way, where it saw its first offensive action on June 1, 1864, at the Battle of Cold Harbor, where the brigade charged and captured several hundred prisoners, and also managed to hold against several counterattacks on June 2. It also participated in the major attack on June 3, being placed second and third in the line of battle in Keifer's Brigade in the 3rd Division, where they were ordered to proceeded to advance 200 yards, where upon they entrenched under heavy fire.

The unit fought during Early's invasion of Maryland at Monocacy and other locations. During the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1864 if fought at the Battles of Summit Point, Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Opequon, Cedar Creek and other locations before being moved to Washington, D. The unit defended Fort Fisher during the Siege or Petersburg. It assaulted on April 2, 1865 leading to the fall of Petersburg. During the Appomattox Campaign, the unit fought at the Battles of Amelia Springs, Sayler's Creek and at the Battle of Appomattox Court House.

It was present for the surrender of Lee and his Army. The unit conducted an expedition to Danville, Virginia, later that month and performed duty at Danville and Richmond as the war ended, before returning to Washington, D.

Handsomely bound in red, cloth covers with gold, impressed lettering on the spine and black, combat scenes on the cover, the book is clean and it has solid binding throughout. The exterior has no bumping, rubbing or discernible wear.

There is a touch of fading to the spine lettering, but it can still be read. The book is in fine condition otherwise.

The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent condition with no wear. The book has no writing, foxing, smudging, stamps, pasteboards or other markings. It is not an ex-library book. The book features a frontispiece illustration of several members of the unit field and staff. It is rich with photographs, illustrations and battle maps. There are many portraits of unit members in the book. The book contains a detailed roster of the unit, organized by company, providing Civil War service details of each member of the unit.
