For your consideration is a FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of SLAVE POWER: IT'S CHARACTER, CAREER and PROBABLE DESIGNS: Being an Attempt to Explain the Real Issues Involved in the American Contest by J. Cairnes published by Carleton, New York, 1862 (the same year as first published in London). The book consists of xvi, 171 pages bound in the publisher's original brown diced cloth over boards with brown endpapers, covers paneled in blind, and spine lettered in bronze. The book is in very good condition with light bumping to the corners, some shelf wear to the spine head and foot. And fading to the spine lettering. It is a remarkably tight copy with no foxing. The book is 8vo and measures 9 3/8" x 6 1/4". Cairnes book criticized slavery and since it was published soon after the start of the American Civil War (1861 War start vs 1862 publication), the book had considerable influence in causing British opinion to support the Northern cause.
