The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government by Jefferson Davis. Appleton and Company (1, 3, and 5 Bond Street). This two-volume set is a remarkable piece of our Civil War and post-Civil War history. I will say that the books are in very solid condition given their age: bindings are still intact, boards are solid and showing relatively little wear. The spine has some fraying/peeling of the cover material on the upper and lower segments.
Edge had a small, 4 mm wide x 3 mm deep gauge near the binding. There is no marking, highlighting, or other writing I've encountered on any of the pages. All of the engravings/prints are in wonderful shape with the rice paper protective covers intact (though there are ghost images present in adjoining pages to these prints).
Foxing is present on most pages consistent with the age of the books. There are stickers (about 3cm x 5 cm) on the inside of the front covers of both volumes labeled G. Foster" with "Bought: 9/13/83" and "Cost: (Illegible). These have been glued (and in one instance pinned) to the last few pages of each volume. These pages covered by clippings, 7 in total, are the advertisement sections promoting other works by the publisher, blank pages, and-in the case of Volume I. The actual back inside cover and back flyleaf.
