Rare, gold presentation Civil War Corps Badge, for 3rd Corps, 3rd Company. Engraved on the top suspension bar to 11th NY Battery. On the reverse of the badge itself, engraved to Col. Jeweler made of low karat gold with hard enamel inset and with top quality presentation engraving.
Weighs approximately 6 grams and measures approximately 1 1/4 across the top bar. Likely made and presented near or at the end of this soldier's career, 20 years after the end of the Civil War.
One of the scans is a screen shot of a roster from the Annual Report of the Adjutant General of the State of New York for the 11th Battery which shows Ropes' Civil War dates of service as August 18, 1862 to June 13, 1865. He was a Quartermaster Sergeant at the end of the Civil War, becoming a Colonel in subsequent years.
His dates of service coincide with the active engagement of the 11th Independent Battery, and he would have seen service at Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Bristoe, Mine Run, Spotslvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege, Jerusalem Plank, Deep Bottom, Appomattox, Sailor's Creek and Appomattox Court House, surrender of Lee and his army.
