Visit our store for more! Today we are delighted to offer for sale an incredibly rare we can't find another example of this photo!

Miniature tintype from the 1800s! An early form of photography, tintypes were made by transferring a positive image directly to a thin sheet of metal, which was coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. They were the most popular form of photography in the 1860s and 1870s. This tintype is miniature-sized and depicts an image of Col.

Perry, who was the Commander of the New York 48th Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He also served during the Mexican War and was a Methodist minister until the outbreak of the Rebellion. This image is mounted under glass in a gilt metal setting with a medallion loop at the top. It's possible this was done to commemorate his death and was worn as a symbol of mourning.

The reverse side of the medallion has a pink paper backing that reads Colonel James H. Perry" and "Abbott & Co. We did considerable research and could not find another image just like this one. Tintype presents in good, as-found antique condition, with considerable darkening due to age but no visible damage.

Frame has patina and tarnish. What a fantastic, incredibly rare, addition to any antique photography or Civil War collection. Dimensions: 1-3/8" in width, 1-5/8" in height (without loop), appx.
