For sale is an extremely rare well researched copy of large sized full leather cover antique Civil War era American FAMILY HOLY BIBLE that originally belongs to Lieutenant Colonel Melzar Richards of the 24th NY Calvary and his descendants. Melzar Richards enlisted and was appointed Captain in the War of the Rebellion in 1861 on Lincoln's first call for 75,000 volunteers, formed the 24th New York Infantry, served two years, re-enlisted and formed the 24th Cavalry, was promoted to Colonel and was killed in battle, April 9, 1865, five days before Lee surrendered, ending the war and leaving his widow Catherine with seven children. The Bible is printed in the year 1850 by the American Bible Society. The family record page contains original quill pen written entries related to the Richards family, possibly written by Melzar himself. The Bible is large in dimension, 11" by 9" for the cover size, about 3 thick. The front and back cover are both full leather and in good antique condition. The side binding is tight and has no cracks and no losses on spine!

Age related sign of rubbing is to be expected. All pages appear to be present. There are also some age related foxing, yellowing, staining commensurate with age. Please check all photos for detailed condition. Coming with the Bible are a set of books, lithograph print, local records and pamphlets, photographs that all traces back to the Richards family members.

One article helps to identify the honorable military history of the family for 11 generations starting from a Indian fighter who arrived with the Mayflower. Other documents point out LTC Richards' son, also a military man, serving as the principle of a high school in Mexico, NY.

Melzar Clinton Richards, another son of LTC Richards, is a West Point graduate with a funeral tributary article retracing his life. Some of these documents has binding tears but are generally readable copies.

All in all, this is a rare pre Civil War American religious text from an important military officer ready to become a significant piece in your antique Civil War artifacts/antique bible collection.
