Andrew Jackson was president of the U. When this jug was made in the 1830s. It has survived almost 200 years with no chips, cracks or repairs. It was made about 25 years before the American Civil War! Signed "H and G Nash Utica", the pottery was operated by Henry and George Nash in Utica New York from about 1832 to 1837 or 1839.
Sources differ on the exact year the mark was discontinued but it is a relatively short span which make the jugs that much harder to find. This salt glazed stoneware jug is about 13 tall, it features a big belly and small foot, typical in the earlier stoneware jugs. Later jugs became straight sided. The cobalt decoration appears to be a peony flower. There is some glaze and color loss to the flower.
It is a hand turned piece with a few drips and discolorations, presumably from liquids the jug held at one time. Some of these look like they will clean off. It is solid from top to bottom. Note: Wiggly lines on the bottom are not cracks, they are just wiggly lines in the clay.
