Writes so many details of her daily life. Her entries bring the reader right back to 1866.. Perhaps one of the best ways to describe a diary is by taking a few excerpts from it.
Got my cloth from the weavers, made one pair of sheets.... Made a pair of sheepskin mittens.... Very cold again this morning, no sabbath school nor meeting, a long lonesome day. A sabbath without a meeting is a long lonesome day for me.... Hazzards and sewed for her through the day. She cripled with sore fingers. John went to Brockport with pork, boys finished skiding logs.... Broke my churn, always sorry to destroy any thing. Charles & wife gone to the ridge. Ella to Brockport, John to Mr. Knights and the boys to the school house. No meeting or sabbath school, a long lonesome day. I from childhood, was brought up to regard the sabbath, and I esteem it a great privilige to attend divine service on that day, but if we are at times deprived, we ought not to murmur....John went to mill, I went with him to Georges. While gone Charles & the girls had lots company; had an invite to eat goose in the evening to Mr. Barts, all went of course and had the pleasure of riding home in the rain....
Went down to see Mr. Holman, is not expected to live through the night, John stays with him all night.... Charles and Eva gone down to sit up with the corpse.... Went to the lake in company with others and went on that great vessel. This afternoon Albert & Menzo helped unload it and it sailed away....
(July 4) This has been a day to be remembered, for it has rained nearly all day and no doubt there has been many disappointments and perhaps sad occurrences ever to be remembered. Whoever new a fourth to pass without hearing of some sad accident.... O how much I have thought of Rudolph today, it does not seem possible that it is four years since he left home.... I have been spinning again, Ella sewing - John & the boys gone to another school meeting, they are contemplating building a school house.... Mrs Lambert Elliot died this afternoon. One after another is taken and truly while in life we are in the midst of death.... Charles had a tooth drawn, been sick all day... Charles no better, quite sick, his head swolen very bad.... We thought him dying this afternoon. He is very sick indeed. The doctor been to see him twice today.... The last day in the year. This awesome diary has 365 entries a nd it measures 3" x 6".
