It is in the form of a Maltese cross and reads, on the front, 24th N. Sans Peur et Sans Reproche from the Brigade Com'dr & Staff June 1, 1863. " The reverse reads "Iron Brigade in the center along with the following battles: Bull Run, Falmouth, Rappahannock Station, Antietam, Fredericksburgh, Chancellorsville, Groveton, South Mountain, Manassas Plains, Sulphur Springs, Gainesville, and Deep Creek. This medal comes with a large hard bound book titled OFFICERS OF THE ARMY AND NAVY (VOLUNTEER) WHO SERVED IN THE CIVIL WAR. Brevet Major Cranford has a one-page write-up and photograph of him on page 295.
The book comes with this lot. Including a CDV of him and a screen sho copy found online of Cranford wearing the gold medal presented to him from Civil War biographies Carson-Culbert Green Wood. Medal weighs approx 20 grams and tested at least 18kt solid gold.
