Pre-Civil War Black Ribbon Cockade with Excelsior Device for New York Militia

  
This 5 black silk and velvet cockade features a brass New York device at its center. Likely this would have been worn on the chapeau of a New York militia officer. Although often thought of as a mourning object due to its color, black was the official color of cockade to be worn on many pre-Civil War army and militia uniforms. Excellent condition with one tip missing along the bottom edge, along with slight fraying along several of the tips. Please see my other items for more interesting items.
