Uniform Kepi from the Stephen S. Olney Post 253 in Saratoga County, NY. Here is a very nice Civil War veteran's kepi identified to a New York G.

The blue wool kepi has a tarred leather unbound visor with a decorative gold rope-like chin strap (non-functional) with two 3-piece New York State seal buttons. Mounted on the front are the brass numerals "253" indicating the post number. Columbus, Ohio and so marked in silver ink on the interior crown of the kepi.

The interior of the kepi is lined in dark green polished cotton, some of which has come un-stitched, and it has a thin brown leather sweatband of which, approximately, one third is missing. There are other small losses to the sweat band as well. On the left rear quarter of the kepi there are a few small moth holes (see photograph) and a few worn spots at the base of the bottom band but the remainder of the kepi is in very nice condition. Post 253 was named after 1st Lieutenant Stephen S. Olney, Company F of the 115th New York Volunteers also known as The Iron Hearted Regiment.

Olney was killed in action in the attack on Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865. A great opportunity to secure a kepi from an identified New York G. The item "Post Civil War G. Olney Post 253 Saratoga County, NY" is in sale since Wednesday, February 17, 2021.
