Personal Memoirs Of U. S. Grant, First Edition, Qtr. Leather, Good Condition

  

This is the Personal Memoirs of U. S Grant, the legendary Union general who defeated the Confederacy in the Civil War. He was persuaded to write this by Mark Twain who co-owned the Webster publishing company which published the memoirs in various editions. This is quarter leather (spines and part of the covers) with marbled end papers, with binding in sturdy condition.

Foxing is mainly in Vol. 2 among a few pages prior to the actual text of the volume. The text in both volumes is near mint. One of the foldouts, a very thin almost tissue-like document reproducing a handwritten letter of Grant's is in poor condition. It can be carefully taped but there are a couple of small sections torn out (though not with any content).

This is usually the most problematic issue among the various edition of the Memoirs due to its delicacy and age. The other foldouts and maps are near mint. The two Grant portraits also look great. This is a wonderful keepsake to have and to pass on to the next generation.

The more commonly found edition is the green clothbound one but are likewise subject to foxing and tears due to age. This set is a priced very well.
