He was an 18-year-old blacksmith when he enlisted at Ellicott, Chautauqua County, New York, August 19, 1863, as a substitute for August Lass, who had been drafted. He was promoted to sergeant and mustered out for disability at Alexandria, Virginia, October 3, 1864.
