He was a Lieutenant in the 22. NY Cavalry in the Civil War. I actually found some info on the 22.

NY Cavalry and a roster with his name (see links below). He is wearing a Union Cavalry officer uniform with the high top boots typical of Civil War cavalry. He is holding a kepi and sword and has a pistol tucked in the top of his boot.

He also appears to have. Pair of binoculars over his shoulder. The back of the photo is A. & commsy (commissary) 22 NYC. The photo has expected age wear but is in VERY NICE condition for its age, no rips, tears or creases.

It comes in a Lucite protective holder. This is a WONDERFUL CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS PHOTO COLLECTIBLE AND A GREAT PIECE OF HISTORY! Enrolled, March 4, 1864, at Rochester; mustered in as first lieutenant and regimental commissary, to date January 29, 1864, to serve three years; \ mustered out with regiment, August 1, 1865, at Winchester, Va. Commissioned first lieutenant and regimental commissary, March 30,1804, with rank from January 29,1864, original.
