Carl Diem is listed in New York City directories as a liquor dealer at 517 Eighth Avenue. Cyprian Diem, possibly the same person, is listed as a brewer at 565 4th Street, the address on this token which has Constanz Brewery spelled in German on the token.
Diem obtained this store card token from local token maker Emil Sigel. Two custom dies was used to strike tokens in a variety of sizes and metals. This is the main variety prepared for circulation and it is somewhat uncommon.
The 3rd edition store card book lists the size of this token as 26mm, but it is actually 28mm. This is a rare size for Civil War tokens.
This is a nice uncirculated specimen. The color is a chocolate brown toning traces in protected areas of the design. It is well struck and the surfaces exhibit nice luster.
