Named Civil War Medal Badge 5th New York Heavy Artillery - John J. A beautiful, early bronze medal to the 6th NY Heavy Artillery, also known as the Anthony Wayne Guard. Nicely engraved to John Sheridan of Company K. John Sheridan enlisted in August of 1862 at age 22. Likely minted very soon after the war.

Interestingly the only other example of this medal is also to a solider in Co. The 6th would be engaged in nearly every battle of the Overland, and Richmond Petersburg Campaigns as well as some fighting in the Shenandoah Valley. In little over a year (May of 64 - August of 65) the 6th lost 136 men and officers killed and wounded. A beautiful medal to a hard fighting outfit.
