At the Battle of Big Bethel in 1861, Winthrop was one of the first Union soldiers, and the first Major, killed in the Civil War. Unable to find a publisher during his lifetime, Winthrop's books began to be published shortly after his death.

An ardent abolitionist, his works largely focused on the granduer and beauty found in wilderness. Life in the Open Air is a scarce book that includes.
