This is a large (17" x 13" x 11) wallpaper hat box dating from approximately 1865. It is lined with newspaper on the bottom and inside the lid, with articles dated 1864 and 1865.

Apparently from upstate New York or Vermont (there are references to Ticonderoga and Westport, NY). There is significant loss of paper, showing an underlying layer of wallpaper of different colors. There is also significant flaking and separation around the seams, although the box is still firm and sturdy.
