VERY EARLY enlistment, this Regiment fought at Blackburn's Ford and 1st Bull Run, the Peninsula Campaign, Antietam, Shepherdstown, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. In June of 1863 the unit, having suffered heavy losses, was transferred into the 140th New York Zouave Regiment, then went on to fight with distinction at Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and was present at Lee's surrender at Appomattox. If there is any Regiment that can be said to have participated through the entire Civil War across all five Aprils, this is it.
