DATED 5/28/1863 ON NEW YORK TRIBUNE LETTERHEAD. GREELEY WAS AN ANTI-SLAVERY ABOLITIONIST WHO WAS THE EDITOR OF THE NEW YORK TRIBUNE AND SUPPORTED ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND THE WAR EFFORT TO ABOLISH SLAVERY. THIS LETTER WAS WRITTEN MAY 28, 1863, RIGHT BEFORE THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG TO HIS FRIEND DR. IN THE LETTER (SEE CONTENTS BELOW). GREELEY TELLS HIS RENOWNED FRIEND DR.

SOMERS HE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO UNDERTAKE HIS REQUEST TO PRINT A PAMPHLET BECAUSE OF "ALL THE ARMY NEWS POURING IN". HE ALSO EXPRESSES CONCERNS WITH THE "COPPERHEADS" WHO WERE TRYING TO NEGOTIATE PEACE WITH THE SOUTH. GREELEY MENTIONS THE UNION MILITARY'S NON-SUCCESS IN THE CIVIL WAR AS "OUR GREAT TROUBLE". FORTUNATELY FOR GREELEY & THE COUNTRY, LESS THAN TWO MONTHS LATER, THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG WOULD TAKE PLACE AND THE UNION VICTORY WOULD TURN THE TIDE AND SLAVERY AND THE CONFEDERATES WOULD BE DEFEATED. I CANNOT FIND ROOM IN THE TRIBUNE FOR ALL THE ARMY NEWS NOW POURING IN UPON US, AND I DARE NOT UNDERTAKE YOUR PAMPHLET. I KNOW THE COPPERHEADS BEAT US IN PRINTING BUT IF WE CAN ONLY BEAT THEIR ALLIES IN THE FIELD, WE SHALL HAVE NO TROUBLE. MILITARY NON-SUCCESS IS OUR GREAT TROUBLE.
