July 6, 1863 Civil War letter and cover from Private Otis Fuller, 8th NY Heavy Artillery stationed at Fort Marshall, Baltimore, written just 3 days after the end of the Battle of Gettysburg. I want you to fill me a tub with butter and send it to me of about 50 pounds, be sure and get as well made one as you can for the one that I got of Mr. Make out a regular bill of Butter Express and Tub and send with the receipt.

Direct your letters and the Butter to Otis Fuller 8th N. Artillery Fort Marshall Baltimore Md. If Butter is not worth more than 12 or 13 cts I think that one cent more than that will pay you for your trouble. But if it is worth 15 cts I can make just enough to pay me for my trouble if Express charges are not to steep.

Our army has been doing fine business for the last few days at Gettysburgh and we are looking anxiously for the news of Lees Surrender as our Officers are crowding forward all of the troops within their reach and we cannot see any possible chance for him to escape for his pontoons are distroyed and the Potomac is not fordable, for we have had heavy rains for the last few days and more last night. I think that the Rebel Army of the Potomac may safely counted among the things that wer, but they may get out of the scrape yet but we cannot see it.

There has thirty thousand Rebels come into this city as Prisoners within the last forty eight hours. So Hurrah for Polk and tell him to Hurrah to.

Dont forget to answer immediately and oblige yours &c. Otis Fuller enlisted on July 21, 1862 at Medina, New York as a Private. He was 29 years old.

On August 11, 1862 he mustered into A Co. He was mustered out on June 5, 1865 at Munsons Hill, Virginia. The recipient of the letter, David Armstrong, was married to Eunice Tanner. Tanner at the beginning of the letter likely refers to Davids father-in-law.
