THE SECRET SERVICE IN THE LATE WAR Comprising the Author's Introduction to the Leading Men at Washington, with the Origin and Organization of the Detective Police, and a Graphic History of his Rich Experiences, North and South, His Perilous Adventures, Hairbreadth Escapes and Valuable Services, Etc. Original dark brown cloth with embossed cover titles, decoration and rules in darker brown, spine titles gilt; floral endpapers. Minor shelf edge wear, text a bit age-toned, else a near fine copy. Posthumously published autobiographical memoir as a government spymaster during and after the Civil War. Baker was evidently over zealous in his spying and removed as government spymaster by Secretary of War Edwin M.

Stanton for tapping his telegraph lines. After the assassination of President Lincoln in 1865, Baker was responsible for the arrests of four of the conspirators and the locating of John Wilkes Booth and David Herold in a barn. Baker died at the age of 41 reportedly from Meningitis but some theorize he was poisoned by high-placed conspirators, including Stanton. 398 pages; plus two pages of advertisements. Tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait and many internal drawings.
