Accodring to one of the newpaper clippings included in the lot, Dubois enlisted at the age of 16 years old. Promoted to Corporal and to Fourth Sergeant. Discharged July, 1866 having served four years and five months. He was in battles of Fredricksburg, Chantilly, South Moutain, Antietam, and Gettysburg. The diary runs from December 1st 1864 until March 12th of 1865.
There is a lot of great material in his writings as many important figures rode on his steamer. There are numerous mentions of him running items for Grant. He talks about running guns to certain troops and having to transport many prisoners. He also gives great insight into the relationships between the enlisted men and the officers. He talk about going to Ford's Theater a few times , one time to see Maggie Mitchell perform Fanchon the Cricket. And there are actually some funny stories as well. One of personal favorite excepts from the diary Took place on December 22nd where it reads in part "will have to coal up, General Harrison was foolish enough to go in swimming and had to be pulled out".
The diary is loaded with great stuff and has about 100 pages of writing. Along with the diary is Dubois' discharge paper. Also included in the lot is a letter from Levi Snyder who we believe was also from Kingston and had ties to the Dubois family.
Apparently Snyder was a commissioned officer and talks about some of the things he has been doing lately. Finally the last item that came with the lot is an early flag. We are not sure what the flag was for but is definitely of the period. Possibly a regiment flag of some sort.
The flag measures 41.5 x 33 inches. It does have some holes but still displays well. Please feel free to ask any questions. Many of the items we sell are well over 100 years old.
