General sent two hundred and fifty of his best men to burn a bridge on the railroad and they had a big fight, got within three miles of the road and came across twelve hundred men and six pieces of guns, colonel ordered squadron to charge them, broke three lines of the rebels, took an ambulance, four prisoners and killed about twenty, when we got to lines could not break it so had to go back the best way we could. Had to swim three rivers to get back to our command with but a small loss, mentions four men killed, lost six and fourteen wounded, general gave us great praise, said the first saber charge ever made in this department, I was with major in charge of the Pioneer Corps, built corduroy bridge for wagons to get through the mud, were were in the woods for three hundred miles, called the Pine Woods, we went through three or four little cities, went three days without seeing a house, went two days without grub or feed for our horses. Excellent letter with complete transcript, two 8x12 pages with some very minor patia in place usual folds. Great letter to say the least. Residence was not listed; 21 years old.
Enlisted on 8/8/1865 at Glens Falls, NY as a Private. On 8/8/1865 he mustered into "E" NY 2nd Vet Cavalry He was Mustered Out on 11/8/1865 at Talladega, AL Intra Regimental Company Transfers: 9/8/1863 from company E to company A. For all Civil War and paper items.
