Langworthy joined the 85th new York in 1862, serving to the War's End in North Carolina. Over 220 of the men of the 85th died in prison camps. George Langworthy away at Roanoke escaped capture. An Original Civil War letter form Private Langworthy at Plymouth, NC, Dec 14, 1864 to cousin Charlotte: he just went on an expedition to Pitch Landing on the Chowan River, breaking up a rebel camp (The Union force captured a major haul of supplies meant for Lee's Army) ; he reports part of the 85th captured 40 rebels incl a Colonel and he will escort them to Roanoke Island. He is now aboard the SS John Faron.

Charles Edwards visited on the USS Wilderness, has been chasing blockade runners at Wilmington. That many would have lived had they been treated humanely. Signed "Cousin George I " (His letters are seen on museum sites and always signed this way) 4pp ink, 8 x 11. Comes w service info- His cousins Ralph & Daniel Langworthy also served in the 85th, Daniel was captured at Plymouth but escaped.

George spends the rest of the War in North Carolina incl the campaigns at Kinston and New Berne, NC. Minor edge wear, tape stain at fold, Overall VG. NOTE: Any repair to a paper item is listed.
