Civil War New York Depot Canteen withCover, Jack Chain and Stopper

  
Offered here is a Civil War Model 1858 smoothside canteen issued by the New York Depot. The pewter spout has no makers mark. It has initials "L E" clearly carved into it, presumably belonging to the soldier who owned the canteen. It has it's original wool cover with the correct seam stitching. The original stopper is secured with a jack chain, which is a typical feature of New York Depot canteens. This canteen is in very nice condition. The tin is solid with no holes or seam splits that I can find. The wool cover is in nice shape with a small area of wear on one side (see picture). There are shallow hip pushes in the center of both sides, which is evidence of its actual use.
