CIVIL WAR M 1850 STAFF AND FIELD PRESENTATION HIGH GRADE OFFICER SWORD CA 1861 NEW YORK STYLE UNMARKED. This is a nice looking Civil War sword with a scarce handle! It is an original Civil War era foot officers sword.
This is the rare version with the gutta purcha grip handle and it is present and has a beautiful look. This material is a form of thermoplastic rubber. They displayed quite well but were very fragile compared to the other materials used for handles. These gutta purcha style rubber handles are very scarce to find and this one is a beauty.
The wire is the original twisted double strand copper wire with a fine look. It has the brass handguard and pommel cap with a thick golden patina all over the brass. The blade is 30-3/4th inches in length. On each side of the blade you can still see the original factory etching. On the front side it has the floral and geometric designs and the "UNION" lettering in one of the flourishes.
The back side of the etching has the block letter "US" in the center of the etching. The sword is accompanied by the original leather and brass scabbard. As you can see, the scabbard is beautifully ornate. IT has the very detailed cast work as well as the extra hand chase work that accents the brass. On very interesting thing is that the portion of the mounts that the ring goes though is designed like the head of an eagle.
What an amazing extra on an already gorgeous piece. It is a beautiful original Civil War foot officer's sword with the scarce gutta purcha handle and very detailed scabbard.
