Civil War Letter by Thomas Melhinch 60th NY Inf. Co. H, Lookout Mountain, 1863

  

It is dated November 26th, 1863 soon after the battle of Lookout Mountain which his Company participated in. The Transcript of the letter is below.

I received your kind and welcome letter yesterday and was glad to hear that you was well. Our boys have had a pretty hard time of it for the last 2 or 3 days a fighting the ____.

We have drove the enemy off from Lookout Mountain are after them yet. It happened by chance that I was detailed at Division headquarters and did not get into it. We are within 5 miles of Chattanooga. I cannot write much this morning but I will try and do better next time. Please write as soon as you get this and oblige your affectionate brother. Re-enlisted as a veteran, December 14, 1863; promoted to Corporal, July 1, 1865; mustered out with company, July 17, 1865, at Alexandria, VA. Letter is in nice condition. Written on single sheet of lined paper. A couple small and minor tears, with three horizontal folds and two vertical folds.
