During the Civil War Firemen were exempted from conscription because they were essential to protect lives and property. An Original Civil War'Exempt Fireman's Certificate given by the City of Rochester, New York to Michel McMullen on February 13, 1764.

This handsome Certificate is the first one I have ever seen and bears an affixed blank blue seal. The Certificate is signed by Rochester Mayor N.

1p 8 x 11 ptd/ink with edge wear, age stains, Overall VG. The Certificate comes with service info for McMullen who had enlisted in 1862 as Lieutenant, 105th New York Volunteers and was taken prisoner, spending time at Belle Island Prison Camp, Richmond, Virginia until he was paroled and mustered out March, 1863. He then re-enlisted in 1864 as Captain of the Rochester Cavalry 22nd New York Cavalry, Company D 2 weeks before he was issued the Exemption, but served until November, 1864 when he was wounded in action in the Shenandoah Valley at Middletown, Virginia.
