The image was taken at Matthew Bradys photography studio in Washington, D. Siegfried Friedrich Von Forstner, who was born on November 14, 1828, originally served as a Captain with Company E of the 8th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
On December 27, 1863, he was transferred to the 3rd New Jersey Cavalry Regiment and was promoted to the rank of Major. He would served with the 3rd NJ Cavalry until April 11, 1864, when he was mustered out of the regiment. He would later die on September 18, 1891. Von Forstners civilian occupation was that of a Civil Engineer and he made numerous maps which helped the military with the analysis of the campaigns during the Civil War.
