Civil War Discharge Documents - POW / 5th NY Cavalry Soldier. The three documents in the listing are all for Civil War soldier Matthew Strait, NY 5th Cavalry "E" Co.. The discharge document dated January 1, 1865 has some light wear, fading and blemishing throughout. There are a few small areas of paper loss along the outer edge where the document has been folded.
The discharge document dated December 31, 1863 has some very light wear and blemishing. The third document is dated on the back March 19th, 1864 and has some light blemishing an discoloration throughout the document. Matthew Strait - Enlisted on 8/30/1861 at Rawson, NY as a Private and was mustered on 8/31/1861 into "E" Co. He was mustered out on 7/19/1865 at Winchester, VA.
During his service he was listed as wounded (date and place not stated), Paroled 3/15/1863 (place not stated) and POW 3/21/1863 in Chantilly, VA. 8 1/2" x 11 3/16"; 1863 document measures approx.8 3/8" x 10 1/4"; 1864 document measures approx. 7 15/16" x 10 3/8".
