General Edwin Voss Sumner, the son of Cavalry legend General EV Sumner who died in 1863, was a noted cavalry commander in his own right, beginning the War as 2nd LT with the 1st US Cavalry, battles incl Gettysburg, & with the 1st New York Mounted Rifles which fought from Suffolk to Petersburg, finishing the War with the designation as the 4th NY Provisional Cavalry. Postwar General Sumner commanded US Cavalry regiments on the Indian Frontier incl the 7th US Cavalry.
An Original Civil War Commission appointing Robert Hatchman Corporal, Company C, 4th New York Provisional Cavalry, Nov 28, 1865 at City Point, Virginia, "to date from December 23, 1864", with Federal eagle illus on heavy stock paper, signed by Colonel Edwin Voss Sumner Jr, 1st NY Cavalry, as Brevet Brigadier General, and also by Adjutant Francis Kennedy. The 16 x 11 Commission has age stains, edge wear, and is Overall VG. Comes w service info: Corporal Robert HW Hatchman from Troy, New York served 1862-65. General Orders and other imprints.
