Evans, Norfolk, Virginia, of Private Benjamin F. Hildreth of the 13th New York Heavy Artillery, a unit that served in the Army of the James in 1864 and 1865.

Hildreth was forty-three years old when he enlisted in September 1864. He was mustered out at Norfolk in June 1865.

On the reverse of the carte is the photographers imprint, a revenue stamp, and a modern ink inscription identifying the subject as Hildreth in 1865 and as Kens Grandfather. The carte is in good condition with wear to the mount and a couple slight creases at the corners, likely from an album placement. It measures about 2 3/8" x 4".
