An original Civil War General Courtmartial Order issued at HQ Department of the South, Hilton Head, South Carolina,, March 1, 1865 charging 3 white noncom officers of the 144th New York Infantry- Corporals W Harrison Smith, James Dazell and Wilbur Bradley with refusing to take charge of a "colored relief of the guard" at the Provost Guard House, Hilton Head, South Carolina, finding them guilty and sentencing them to be reduced to the ranks with 30 days loss of pay. 4pp 8 x 5 ptd.

Edge wear, 2 punch slits in left margin, Overall VG. The order is ink signed by Captain TD Hodges, 35th US Colored Troop as AAAG.

The signer of the order, Thorndyke Deland Hodges served with the 35th Mass surviving the battle of Antietam, and then rose to Major of the 35th USCT fighting at the Battles of Olustee & Honey Hill, Florida.
