CIVIL WAR A SERGEANT'S MEMORIAL BY HIS FATHER BY J. If I were a Civil War book collector, you would not find this listing; it is an extraordinary book in extraordinary condition. Thompson, writing about the loss of his young son, John H. Thompson, his first born, during the Civil War.

The father is a pastor who writes the book and releases it to the public after a plea from members of his Bible Class for Young Men, of which his lost son was a part, beseeches him to do so. This is a sort of biography, recalling poignant memories of his young son (only 20 years old) who died during his deployment in the Union Army and the Civil War. It is a very moving account of special moments in a father's memory, often intimate, even emotional, of his young son and the young man's character. This book helps to understand the personal toll of the Civil War as experience by our fellow Americans at the time. This small hard cover book (4 ¼ x 6 ¼ inches, 242 pages) was published by Anson D.

The book is bound in blind-stamped brown paper boards with gilt titles on the spine. It is sheathed in an ill-fitting but still effective plastic dust wrapper, perhaps not original to the book. There is a very finely made engraving of his son as the frontispiece, which really reveals his youth.

The page edges are tinted red all around. A bookseller or collector's notes on the first blank page suggest that this is a story from the 406. Don't hesitate on this one; it won't last. This book is in very good condition, especially noteworthy for its age. The hard covers are in remarkably good condition without any real blemishes, doubtless because they have been protected by the plastic dust jacket.

The gilt titles on the spine are not as bright as they once were but are still legible. Inside, as mentioned, there are some lightly penciled bookseller's notes on the first blank page. This is the only mark I found in the book although there is some light foxing affecting the pages near the tissue-guard of the frontispiece and in some other random places within the book.

Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound, perhaps a bit canted to the right. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Please consider "book-marking" my site so you can easily return to a constantly changing inventory of other truly vintage books and/or collectible works.

Please also be aware that all my current listings are "spring-summer-fall season" listings held here in New York State. Once the snows start again and it gets cold, I will hightail it to Florida, ending these listings and reverting to another catalogue of different books held there.
