Langworthy joined the 85th Nw York in 1862, serving to the War's End in North Carolina. In 1864 his unit was sent to Plymouth, North Carolina nd 3 months later almost the entire regiment was surrendered to Hokes Confederate Army Over 220 of the men of the 85th died in prison camps. George Langworthy was fortunately away at Roanoke Island and escaped capture. An Original Civil War letter from Langworthy at Roanoke Island May 17, 1865 to his cousin Charlotte: We are all celebrating the collapse of the Confederacy, the rebels admit they are overpowered but are not the best friends of the Union yet and he fears this generation never will be. He hopes to come home before the sickly season.

We are at a station on the KR (Kinston Railroad) called Mosely Hall- the people are docile, plenty of strawberries, peas and potatoes. He is proud that he has been commissioned a 2nd lieutenant, hopes to be at Watch Hill (RI) this fall but is not in the best of health. He also asks of Westerly kin to write him.
