CDV Photo Album, Yorktown NY Strang Family Genealogy Civil War Military School

  
PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR ADDITIONAL IMAGES. Antique photograph album featuring members of the Strang family as well as other residents local to the Yorktown, NY area. There is a total of 81 photos in slots, most are CDVs but there are some tintypes as well, also included are 5 or 6 loose gemtype tins. All but 5 slots are filled, this album remains intact as I acquired it, nothing removed.

Many of the identified photos are members of the Strang family but there are other names identified such as Requa, Lounsbury, Westervelt, Barnes, Reynolds, Tomkins, Clark, and Woodruff. Not all photographs are identified but I didn't remove them all to see if there was writing on the backs of any.

Most of the photographers I saw were from Peekskill, NYC & Poughkeepsie but I did notice a few from Northampton, MA as well. There are 11 photos of young men in military uniform, I believe all of the military photographs were shot by Slee Brothers of Poughkeepsie, NY. I believe most of these young men were enrolled at the Peekskill Military Academy in Peekskill, NY. The academy has an interesting history related to the Strang family dating back to the Revolutionary War. Peekskill Military Academy (PMA), a prominent part of the Peekskill community for 135 years, closed its Oak Hill campus rather abruptly in 1968.

But determined alumni still hope to revive the venerable institution on a new site. A site atop Oak Hill with a good view of the Hudson River Valley was selected for the academy.

On the grounds was a tree used during the Revolutionary War to hang Daniel Strang , a spy for the British, on January 27, 1777. The first academy building was three stories high, with a dining room, quarters for the principal's family, schoolrooms and nine small bedrooms for boarding students. The first children were local boys and girls. Success was immediate and soon another building was needed. By 1838 there were 47 students studying English, Latin, Greek, French, math and science. Coeducation was short-lived; in 1841 the trustees decided that the academy should have only male students. Album is good with medium wear to the cover and spine, the album pages are starting to separate from the binding a bit but all remain attached, the photographs are mostly very good, some pages show foxing and there is a bit of foxing to some photos.
