This is an authentic and EXTREMELY RARE Civil War STIRRUP used by UNION soldiers for, most likely, drivers of Artillery Horses those which pulled. Artillery pieces and accompany wagons or carts. As shown, it includes the clear markings: US WATERVLIET ARSENAL and NY. There are also 3 initials engraved at the end of the base, these being P V H , representing the inspector's initials. It is made of thick BRASS and heavy (weighs about 1.2 pounds).
Please note the top part of this stirrup includes two opposing prongs and not the typical solid bar one usually finds on such stirrups. It is also smooth bottomed , and not with several projections as would be used by Cavalry (for better boot grip).
I believe this is further evidence. That this was used only for Artillery Horses because Cavalry stirrups typically include the solid bar and projections, making this all the more rare. (I would appreciate any inputs which, if authenticated, will be added to this listing - thank you in advance).
