Antique Vintage Christmas Carol Song Book Civil War Era 1864 Thomas Nast St Nick
Christmas Poems and Pictures: A Collection of Songs, Carols, and Descriptive Poems, Relating to the Festival of Christmas. Illustrated From Drawings by Distinguished Artists. With Poems/Songs/Content from famous authors such as Sir Walter Scott, William Thackeray, William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Edmund Spenser, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Alfred Tennyson, and many others including a section on Old English Carols. Illustrations by John Gilbert, Birket Foster, Raphael, and others, with the final illustration being Thomas Nast's drawing of a rotund, bearded, pipe-smoking Saint Nicholas going down a chimney with a sack of toys that accompanies Clement Moore's A Visit from St.
The book measures 9.25" x 7". Some splitting at the front cover/spine joint, mostly at the bottom half, but with about a 2.5 tear from the top. The spine ends are torn and frayed, and the board corners are rubbed and cardboard exposed. The boards are decorated in gilt and blind and is lightly rubbed and has a few minor scuff marks. The second free endpaper has a gift inscription dated 1863, which is unusual since this publication is dated 1864 - perhaps an early print and gift from someone involved in the publishing.
Some staining to the pages and thumbing in the margins, but no foxing in the book. Small piece of the top of the rear endpaper is torn off and stuck to the rear pastedown. A charming and delightful book, published near the end of the Civil War. This item is in the category "Books & Magazines\Antiquarian & Collectible".
