But it is truly one of a kind, in that it is inscribed by the author, Rear Admiral Stevens on the title page! The author crossed out his printed name and rank and signed his name below it with his rank of Rear Admiral, adding the word Retired.
He also wrote the date and place: Mohonk NY Oct 6 - 08. Stevens was born Aug 18, 1846 and died Jan. He served in the United States Navy from the Civil War to the Spanish-American War, attaining in 1901 the rank of rear admiral. In the attacks on Fort Fisher, NC in 1865 he exhibited great gallantry in leading his landing party of U. Marines through heavy fire to charge the Confederate defenses, continuing to fight even after his fourth wound, drawing his pistol and threatening to kill any man who attempted to amputate his leg in surgery when he was evacuated.In 1907 - 1908 he commanded the Great White Fleet on its worldwide cruise from the Atlantic Ocean through the Straits of Magellan to the Pacific Ocean. 18, 1908 at the mandatory retirement age of 62, so he signed this book about a month and a half after his retirement.
Nicely bound with gilt decorations and lettering on the front cover and spine. The top page edges are green, the other edges are untrimmed.
A fine addition for your collection of rare books! Very light wear with a slight bump to the upper rear corner and a tiny bump/nick to the cloth of the fore-edge of the rear cover near the bottom, otherwise in very good + condition with a solid binding and clean pages, hinges are sound.Note: The letter/number at the end of the title line for this listing is just an inventory code for locating the book.
