Volunteers during the conduct of the American Civil War. The batter served in the Department of North Carolina and in the Department of Virginia and North Carolina during the war. The unit was organized as Battery "B", New York Rocket Battalion, and designated the 24th Battery on February 11, 1863, having served as such provisionally since October 19, 1862.

The unit was attached to Artillery Brigade, Department of North Carolina until January 1863 then to the Artillery Brigade of XVIII Army Corps in the Department of North Carolina until May of 1863. The unit served in the District of the Albemarle, Department of North Carolina until July 1863, the Department of Virginia and North Carolina until February 1864, and in the District of Plymouth, North Carolina, until April of 1864. The unit participated in the Expedition from New Berne, the action at Rawie's Hill, and Foster's expedition to Goldsboro, including the actions at Kinston, at Whitehall, and at Goldsboro in late 1862.

In 1863, the unit performed duty at New Berne. It participated in the expedition from New Berne to Trenton, Pollockville, Young's Cross Roads and Swansborought; the expedition to Plymouth; and the expedition from Plymouth to Foster's Mill.

In 1864, the unit participated in the expedition to Lake Phelps, the Siege at Plymouth, and was transferred to the 3rd New York Light Artillery as Battery L in March of 1865. It joined its parent regiment in the Department of North Carolina at the end of 1865.

THIS BOOK IS IN FINE CONDITION This original, first edition, antique book is in exceptional condition. The book comes protected in a clear, Mylar dust jacket to help keep it that way (see photo #3). The book is handsomely presented in brown covers with black, decorative highlights and bright gold cover and spine lettering. The exterior is super sharp and clean; it is in fine condition and has no bumping, rubbing or edge wear.

The gold lettering is exceptionally sharp and bright. The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent condition. The book has no writing, foxing or stamps.

There is a neat bookplate for Essex Institute on the front inside cover. The book has solid binding throughout; the book has no looseness or lean and both hinges are fine. The book has illustrations and maps.

It contains a comprehensive Roll of Honor and a roster of the unit including the Civil War service details of each soldier. The book provides biographical sketches to unit members as well.
