Red cloth covered boards with gold front cover lettering and gold spine lettering, spine gilt slightly faded. Includes Preface dated October 17, 1898 and Index. The upper page edges are gold, the other two page edges are deckle edge. This is an exceedingly rare and important personal Civil War memoir.
The pages are clean without any markings. The only page with any notable condition issue is front end paper, see last picture, all other pages perfect. Binding is tight and square.
Illustrated with a black-and-white portrait plate frontispiece of Charles A. Dana, Assistant Secretary of War from 1863 to 1865, with a fine condition tissue-guard overlay. Dana wrote these Recollections of the Civil War, completed only a few months before his death on October 17, 1897.
He was forty-four years old when his appointment as Assistant Secretary of War put him behind the scenes of the great drama then enacting, and brought him into personal relations with the conspicuous civilians and soldiers of the war period. His career subsequently as the editor of The Sun for thirty years is familiar to most Americans.
It is proper to note the circumstance that the thee years covered by Mr. Dana's Recollections as here recorded constitute the only term during which he held any public office, and the only break in more that half a century of continuous experience in the making of newspapers. 8.5" x 5.75". 120 years old, very scarce and in incredible condition.
