Each book measures a very generous 17" x 12" and includes hundreds of engraved illustrations and battle maps from sketches drawn by Edwin Forbes, William Waud, James E. Hillen, Joseph Becker, Henri Lovie, Francis H. Crane and other artists and eyewitnesses to the conflict. The books were edited by Paul F. Mottelay and Thomas Campbell-Copeland, with an introduction by Robert B.

The covers are bound in pebbled brown cloth, with gilt embossed lettering and decoration. A striking image of a soldier at the center is set within an oval emblazoned with corps badges of the United States Army.

The original tissue interleaving with the full-page color illustration of the corps badges and the portraits of Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Lee is still in place. These two volumes, with engravings on virtually every page, present a remarkable pictorial record of the battles and camp life of Civil War soldiers. Most illustrations are full-page or double-page in size. A section at the rear contains a chronological listing of the war's events, along with statistical tables, including pay rates, pensions, and homestead benefits for veterans, along with an index to illustrations.

The covers have minor edge wear. Both volumes are complete, with no missing pages. The spine on Volume One has splits and chips, the hinges are broken, and the contents are slightly shaken. Cover boards, spine, and hinges on Volume Two are in better shape. A few pages in each volume are detached and show wear, chips, and tears on the edges, and there's an occasional bit of foxing, as well as a scattering of tiny marks and small closed tears.
