Grant, Two Volume Set, 1885 First Edition. Webster & Company, 1885 and 1886. The memoirs of the Civil War hero and 18th president of the United States (1869-77).
He was born in Ohio, attended West Point, served in the Mexican-American War, general of the Union Army and then president. During his presidency he was an advocate of civil rights. Each of the volumes has a steel-engraved frontispiece portrait of Grant with tissue guard and numerous black and white maps and several foldouts of facsimile documents, as well as two engravings - one showing McLean's house at Appomattox where lee's surrender took place, and one showing Grant's birthplace at Point Pleasant, OH. Matched set, 6x9 inches, bound in full leather with gilt titles in red and black bands on the spines, and four raised bands. Vol 1 - 584 pages, Vol 2 - 647 pages.
Light nicks tops of spines, both volumes lightly cracked at top of back spine, about an inch and a half down, but holding very firmly.
