1885 Personal Memoirs U S Grant First Edition Complete VG Civil War Gettysburg

  
Volume I published in 1885; Volume II published in 1886. Both volumes are in very good condition. Green cloth covers, show moderate wear and rubbing, both edgeworn with frayed and bumped corners. Nice gilt titles and emblem on front and back of both volumes, a bit worn. Spine ends are worn, small tears to bottom of both volume. Gilt titles and star decoration on spines, volume 2 stars gilt is worn. Contents of both volumes are tight in their respective bindings and are quite clean. Both volumes are illustrated and have the foldouts.

Volume 1 has a nice steel engraved frontispiece of a. With the original tissue guard. The large fold out is complete w/o tears.

Pages are naturally age toned and there is minimal foxing. One page has a tear in the margin (see photo). There is no other tears, no writing or markings, no bad odors.

Volume 2 also has a steel engraving of the older General Grant also with original tissue guard. This volume has the facsimile inscription by Grant across from his portrait. Here are no writing or markings, no bad odors.

This is a nice solid set that would be a terrific souvenir coming to you from Gettysburg, PA. Grant's memoirs was and still is one of the most highly regarded accounts of the War Between the States. It also contains the account of Grant's involvement in the Mexican American War. Volume I covers events through the Vicksburg Campaign and Volume II covers the remainder of the Civil War.
