William Marks was a successful merchant turned undertaker, but is most notably known as an unapologetic abolitionist whose establishment was an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Marks' hearse was used to transport escaping slaves northwards to Canada on his part of the underground route. He is reported to have assisted in transporting and housing hundreds of slaves escape slavery.

An amazing life story that can be read in more detail by reading the article "William Marks of Naples" by Beth B. Marks no different being a respected businessman and merchant of Naples, New York created his own scrip which was used throughout Naples. These notes both feature an eagle and flag vignette flanked by numerals and end panels containing the denomination. These are some of the finest, if not the finest known scrips from Marks and are both signed by him adding to their allure and value.
