Africa and the American Flag is an interesting account of Commander Andrew Foote's exploits in suppressing the African slave trade off the coast of Africa in the early part of the 19th century. The book became an important source for the growing anti-slavery movement in the Unites States at the time. This fine 1862 edition is Foote's own account of his experience as commander of the Perry off the African coast in the early 1850's, where his dogged attempts to suppress the African slave trade (illegal then under American law) became legendary.

His impassioned account here did much to stir the growing public repugnance for the trade in America.
