Penciled at the top of the page: Speech of 2nd Lt. H, July 4th, 1862, on being presented with a sabor by them at Camp Patterson Park, Baltimore, Md.
President and Gentlemen and Gentlemen of the Committee- As a token of Respect and Esteem which you bear towards me I accept this splendid Gift - this beautiful Sabor at your hands - not for its intrinsic Value - But expressing as it does your feelings toward me - I shall hold it and the - recollections it will always bring - Most Dear - And shall endeavor so to perform my duty towards you and our country that you may Never regret having placed your Confidence in me - It shall be drawn in the defence of justice and of right and may it never be sheathed till they have been maintained - That time I hope soon may come when Peace and Harmony may again be enjoyed in an undivided Union - beneath our glorious flag the Stars and Stripes.
