1862-65 Civil War Era Top Hat Style with Eagle Insignia, WH Clute & Son Manufacturers. WH Clute & Son logo stamped in inside and reads, W. Clute & Son, 96 State St. This is an article out of Top Hatter Magazine on the background of WH Clute & Son - The business was started in 1839 by William H. Clute and Levi Teller under the name Clute & Teller.
Both having learned the art of hat making and fur trading of B. Teller died in 1862 and until 1867 the store was conducted by William H. Clute died in 1871 and the business was run by his son Levi Clute. Beautiful hat that measures approximately 7.5" tall, 10.625" wide. The top circular part is 7. Metal eagle insignia on the front along with a decorative red feather. Overall condition is excellent for its age. Some heavy wear in spots and a soft dent on the upper back area. The inside cloth area shows tears but manufacturing stamp is very strong. I have had a civil war museum expert tell me that the hat was most likely a pre Civil War Militia one off since he identified the metal eagle insignia as Mexican War plate. Lots of people have different ideas.
Bottom line is the hat is of late 1850's- early 1860's hat. The item "1862-1865 Civil War Era Top Hat Style Orig WH Clute & Son, NY, with Eagle Insignia" is in sale since Wednesday, March 4, 2020.
