Civil War Books This scarce, antique book constitutes the attractive Memorial edition of the complete biography of the life of Henry Sanford Gansevoort, brevetted to General and commander for the 13th New York Cavalry.

The book includes his birth and parentage, early education, service in the Seventh Regiment, his commission in the Regular Artillery, and his Civil War service in the Peninsula Campaign, at the Battles of Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, his command of the 13th New York Cavalry, his role if fighting Confederate Colonel John S. Mosby and his raiders, his wounding and capture of Mosby, of his unit, promotions and brevets, the history of the Seventh Regiment New York Cavalry, his character and much more. The book combines biography, history, memorial, and a collection of letters and reports into one volume. The letters are from Colonel Gansevoort at various points in his Civil War career. He captured Mosby's artillery unit, and participated in many other battles and skirmishes.

His health was ruined by the War and he died in 1871. In addition to a narrative of Colonel Gansevoort's life and military career, the book contains several testimonials from friends and superiors. The book provides the personal and official correspondence of Gansevoort. The book also presents a collection of letters related to a variety of Civil War topics including his journey to Washington, his march into Virginia, Ellsworth's death, his efforts to obtain a commission, his participation in various battles, his observations of key leaders, his hardships endured, camp life, and much more.

THIS BOOK IS IN FINE - CONDITION This handsome, antique book is in excellent condition. This is the 1875 book professionally rebound in brown covers with bright, gold lettering on the spine. The exterior is in fine condition. The gold lettering is sharp and bright. The exterior has no bumping, rubbing or wear.

The front cover has black swirls meant to enhance the look, but the photo makes it looks like there is soil, but it is not. The book is sharp, bright and clean.

It has solid binding throughout. The top page edge is covered with protective, gold gilding.

The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent condition. The pages have no writing, smudging, foxing or other marking except for two library stamps. The book contains a full-page frontispiece illustration of Gansevoort as well as 21 other period illustrations and photographs throughout.
